Bali Safari Park vs Bali Zoo — which one and why.
A practical comparison for first-time visitors deciding between Bali Safari and Marine Park (Gianyar) and Bali Zoo (Singapadu).

The short answer
For a first-time wildlife visit on a luxury Bali itinerary we recommend Bali Safari and Marine Park in Gianyar. The open-vehicle savannah loop, the night safari programme, and the Sumatran tiger conservation enclosure make it the more substantial experience. Bali Zoo in Singapadu is a smaller, walk-only park better suited to families with young children who want a half-day rather than a full-day commitment.
Where they actually are
Bali Safari and Marine Park sits on the Gianyar regency coast, on the Bypass Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra road, about 25 kilometres east of Ubud. The park covers roughly 40 hectares of African-savannah-style enclosures designed for open vehicles. Bali Zoo is in Singapadu, Sukawati district, only about 15 minutes from central Ubud — a smaller property of around 12 hectares laid out as a walking park. Most independent visitors confuse the two because both are in Gianyar regency, but the experience formats are completely different.
Animal collections
Bali Safari and Marine Park’s collection includes Sumatran tiger, white tiger, African lion, Asian elephant, Sumatran orangutan, Komodo dragon, and a meaningful primate and ungulate inventory across African and Indonesian zones. The Sumatran tiger conservation enclosure is the strongest single reason to choose this park — fewer than 400 of these tigers remain in the wild according to IUCN Red List data, and the in-park breeding programme is one of the few accredited Sumatran tiger conservation efforts in Indonesia.
Bali Zoo Singapadu has a smaller collection focused on Indonesian and South-East Asian species — orangutan, sun bear, binturong, smaller cat species, and an aviary. The zoo is a recognised conservation participant but the scale is closer to a regional zoo than the safari park’s open-savannah format.
Experience format — the real difference
The safari park’s open-vehicle jeep experience is the differentiator. Guests sit in side-open vehicles that drive through the African savannah enclosure with lions, zebras, and ungulates within metres of the vehicle, and through the Sumatran rainforest enclosure with tigers and elephants. There is also a walking path for closer enclosures and a riverside boat option that crosses the elephant zone. Bali Zoo is purely walk-around. Both have animal interaction options; both run feeding times. Only the safari park has the night safari evening programme.
Night safari — only at Bali Safari and Marine Park
The night safari runs roughly 18:00 to 21:00 with a separate ticket and a dedicated night-vehicle route. Lion behaviour shifts dramatically at dusk, the leopards are visibly more active, and the included Mara River feast dinner is on most independent visitors’ miss list. Our night safari vs day experience briefing has the full timing and ticketing breakdown. Bali Zoo has a Night Zoo programme on certain weekends but the format is much smaller and is not on a vehicle.
Which one for which guest
If the trip is a luxury wildlife focus, choose Bali Safari and Marine Park and add the night programme. If the visit is a half-day with toddlers and you are based in central Ubud, Bali Zoo Singapadu is the closer and gentler option. If the trip is a multi-day safari concierge, our signature multi-day experience sends guests to the safari park for both day and night programmes and pairs the elephant encounter at Mason Adventures separately. We do not include Bali Zoo on the multi-day because the time is better spent on the safari night programme.
Conservation context
Both parks are registered Indonesian conservation participants. The independent reading is straightforward — Wikipedia — Bali Safari and Marine Park covers the safari park’s history and partnerships, and the Indonesia Ministry of Tourism publishes the current accredited conservation operator list. We update our briefing notes against both annually.
